Residential Air Handlers
An air handler contains a fan motor and the indoor coil that is used with an air conditioner and/or heat pump. An air handler is used in the absence of a furnace, such in radiant heating or heat pump installations.
How It Works
When the air conditioning is running, the air conditioner located outside the home begins compressing a gas called refrigerant. Compressing refrigerant turns the gas into a chilled liquid as heat energy is dispersed into the outside air. The chilled refrigerant is pumped inside to the coil system in the air handler. Warm air is then pulled from the home via the fan motor, and forced through the chilled coil.
Air Handler Efficiency
The efficiency of an air handler is primarily dependent on the type of fan motor, and the status of the coil. Variable speed fan motors offer whisper quiet operation and greater efficiency. If the coil is kept clean with a UV lamp and/or regular maintenance, it too will operating efficiently.
